Stress Reduction

The Stress Effect

When you are under stress, how do you feel physically and emotionally? Do any of these symptoms sound familiar to you?…Back, shoulder, and neck pain; tension or migraine headaches; upset or acid stomach; weight gain or loss; fatigue; high blood pressure; chest pain; nervousness and anxiety; depression and moodiness; irritability and frustration; trouble thinking clearly; feeling out of control; argumentative; road rage; overreactions…All of these symptoms (to name just a few) could be indicators that you are experiencing stress or in a stressful situation.

Stress is uncomfortable. It can affect your performance at work or play, your physical health, and your relationships. Here are some other shocking facts about the “stress effect”:

- 60,000 deaths each year are attributed to heart attacks caused by mental stress
- 75-90% of all doctors visits are due to stress-related ailments and stress-related disorders
- Stress plays a major causative role in both physical and mental health
- Stress can affect the onset of, susceptibility to, progression of and recovery from disease
- Stress adversely affects reproduction, sexual behavior, and growth
- Stress makes you more vulnerable to colds, flu, fatigue and infections
- Stress causes digestive problems
- Stress leads to weight gain
- Stress can even lead to suicide

Stress has been linked to obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression, anorexia nervosa, obsessive compulsive behavior, substance abuse, ulcers, diabetes, sexual abuse, hyperthyroidism, hair loss, and even tooth and gum disease.

Chronic stress can also lead to disfunction in the brain, immune system, and cardiovascular and metabolic system. In the brain, stress can lead to neuronal atrophy and destruction of neurons, decreased short term and contextual memory, and poor regulation of the endocrine response to stress. Stress also affects the immune system by increasing sympathetic activity and decreasing cellular immunity. Immune cells migrate to different parts of the body and can worsen autoimmune and allergic conditions. Finally, the effects of chronic stress can create significant damage to the cardiovascular system by increasing the risk of coronary artery disease, elevating blood pressure, increasing atherosclerosis, increasing risk of myocardial infarction, increasing the risk of diabetes, and increasing the likelihood of obesity.

FREQUENT, EFFECTIVE EXERCISE IS ONE OF THE BEST PHYSICAL STRESS-REDUCTION TECHNIQUES!

Exercise and Stress

Did you know that people who are more physically fit have fewer stress-related health problems? That they are more able to handle the long-term effects of stress, without suffering ill health or burnout? Exercise relieves a lot of the symptoms of stress. It relieves tension and tense muscles, provides a timeout from stressful situation, alleviates trouble sleeping at night and sleeping too much during the day, reduces overeating, gives your body time to operate in the “efficiency mode”, provides an outlet for negative emotions, such as frustration, anger, irritability, and promotes a more positive mood and outlook.

Have you ever noticed that when you are exercising, you don’t have time to worry about other things? You are actually resting the nerve cells in the brain that worry, giving those cells time to renew themselves, so they can function normally the next time they are needed. Exercise also releases endorphins into your blood stream giving you that feeling of happiness and positively affecting your overall sense of well-being. The stress effect is also reduced by exercise by increasing the blood flow to the brain bringing additional sugars and oxygen that may be needed when you are thinking intensely and removing waste products more quickly.

The Value of Exercise

Exercise is a great stress reliever – it keeps your body functioning properly so you feel more relaxed and refreshed. Problems can seem less important when you involve yourself in a physical pursuit. Exercise regularly to achieve a more balanced and stress-free life!
