Practice makes Permanent
The concept, Practice Makes Permanent is a short and simple one, but highly impacting if taken seriously and implemented! In my first days as a professional coach I primarily worked with athletes and used this concept with everyone. Soon, as business developed into several divisions and we began partnering with a wider variety of clients, I found that Practice Makes Permanent is one hundred and ten percent applicable to career, family, emotional balance, play, finances, child rearing … in short, all aspects of life.
The Practice Makes Permanent model essentially asks you to realize that you’re always getting better and more skilled at what you’re doing, being or feeling in every moment of life. Be it anger or love, resentment or forgiveness, efficiency of inefficiency, gossiping or trustworthiness, judging or accepting, distraction or focus, lying or honesty, effectiveness or ineffectiveness, procrastination or pro-activity, spending or saving, anxious or calm, time management or time wasting.
No matter what you’re doing, you’re becoming more proficient at that task, emotional pattern, habit, style of communication, or behavior. All you do, think or say is improving by the second. Please get this! Every second of every day you are creating permanence to that which you are doing, feeling, projecting, or being.
This may be a challenging concept to comprehend, but it’s true nonetheless! For example, if you have a disagreement with your boss and react in an offended or angry manner, rather than respond in calm and explanatory way; you are improving your capability to be angry and offended. Which is of course an unproductive way to communicate and results in little to no resolve.
There will always be times where you feel justified to over-react, gossip, be angry or resentful, be unproductive or inefficient, or perhaps procrastinate, but no matter how justified you may feel utilizing counter-productive behavior, is it worth continuing to struggle, to be frustrated, or be unhappy? I assure you, becoming great at being joyful, kind and peaceful, and creating success and abundance is far superior!
Certain situations will be unfair and people will continue to say hurtful or rude things, but I challenge you to not allow others’ actions or words prevent you from being your best self. I encourage you to be mindful that you are constantly getting better and more proficient at something. Ask yourself throughout the day for the next week, is your “something” intentional, empowering and character building, or destructive and success-stealing? Your answers are creating your reality, your relationships, and your career-life. Ultimately, your complete level of success (or lack there of). “Untapped potential awaits intentional practice.”
