Issue 7 - Fall 2007Metabolism: Part 2 This is the second part in a three part series on Metabolism. This quarter focuses on Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and factors affecting metabolism.
Body Weight A person with a greater body weight will have a higher RMR than a smaller person because their body has to work “harder” to support and maintain the extra weight. As an individual gains or loses weight, their RMR can also change. With weight loss, there is often a decrease in RMR. The two main reasons for this decrease are that (1) a smaller body requires fewer calories to maintain the same physiological functions; and (2) during weight loss, the body may try to conserve energy in response to a lower calorie intake.
Body Composition If two people are the same body weight, the person with more muscle will have a higher RMR than the person with less muscle because muscle is more metabolically active than fat. In fact, muscle burns two to four times more calories than fat at rest. Therefore, as a person gains muscle mass, their RMR is likely to increase. The magnitude of this increase in RMR is not clear. Literature supports an increase in RMR anywhere from 13 to 100 calories per kilogram of muscle. A weight gain that is attributed to a gain in fat mass will not affect RMR as much as a gain in muscle mass; however, overall weight gain regardless of body composition results in a higher RMR.

Metabolism cont’d
During weight loss, it is not uncommon to see a drop in RMR Researchers believe that when weight is lost as a result of moderate exercise and dieting, the composition of that weight loss is about 75 percent fat and 25 percent lean tissue. Restrictive diets consisting of less than 1,000 calories per day can result in an acute decrease in resting metabolic rate. This decrease in RMR may be due in part to a decrease in thyroid level and the release of the hormone norepinephrine that accompanies caloric restriction. Adding an exercise program to a diet can preserve some but not all lean muscle tissue. Persons with a history of “yo-yo” dieting do not appear to have a permanent decrease in RMR.
Train the Trainer Day!
Train the trainer day is finally here! The FormWell team has noticed all clients itching to get their ‘revenge’ in the trainers, and now’s your chance. Saturday, October 20th is the scheduled date for the trainers to get their butts kicked. As always, Train the Trainer is for charity, the Nicholas House. The Nicholas House is a shelter for homeless families in Atlanta. The past years have raised thousands of dollars, and we hope this year exceeds last time! There will be a sign up board at the front of the studio with each trainers name. Sign up with your name and amount you would like to bid under either lower or upper body. You can bid on both, or just one body part. Let’s donate to a great cause and make the FormWell trainers feel what you guys feel every day! For more information, contact Chris Engels at chirs@formwell.com or 404-808-7076.
Note from the Owner
As many of you know, I have been working part time at Northside Hospital in their Outpatient Weight Reduction Clinic and Diabetes Education Departments for over 6 years. After moving the clinic up to Alpharetta and then back to Atlanta, the program really lost steam and we decided to take this opportunity to completely change the program and get it started again! I have been working with the Northside team to get this project started for almost a year now and I am happy to announce that the first 12 week class will begin soon!! Based on how popular the program is, we will add more classes at different times and possibly in Alpharetta also.
The program will be similar to the old Weight Reduction Clinic in that it will be a series of classes taught by an Exercise Physiologist (me or Sara Price), a Dietician and a Behavior Therapist. The important changes we have implemented are:
I have been working with individuals on weight loss for years and I have seen many programs come and go. This program has all the components and excellent staff to be successful. If you, or anyone you know, are ready to really change your life, call today to sign up: Northside Hospital Diabetes and Nutrition Education: 404 851 6023

Meet our New Trainer! Welcome Jennifer!
Since most everyone knows I am from Prattville, AL and that I graduated with a M.A. in Exercise Science from the University of Alabama, I will tell you a little about me you might not know. I have experience in teaching pilates and have had the great pleasure of training the University of Alabama women's golf team. In addition to weight training, I enjoy running road races, swimming and kayaking. I have participated in numerous 5k and 10k races as well as one 1/2 marathon and look forward to doing another 1/2 marathon in the spring. I feel that your body is a temple, and you are the only one that can maintain it in order to maximize the quality of life. Not having time to train is not an option, it is a necessity and is something the individual alone can achieve.
